Yes, this is really the ocean - covered with "pancake ice", small patches of ice that are pushing against each other and building a small rim before freezing together to build a solid surface. I would more appropriately call it "pizza ice" but I guess the name was born when pizza wasn't all that popular yet. Note the smooth waves on the water, which are very small considering the fact that winds were in excess of 30 knots that day...
